“It’s no secret that after Napa and Bordeaux–Tuscany quickly comes to mind as one of the most capable venues to shepherd Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyard to bottle. This example comes from the coastal appellation of Maremma which specializes in dusty and textured bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon. The “Prelius” name alludes to an ancient lake that historically stood in the place of these vineyards–5 miles from the sea. This lake was drained in the 1930s to expose what is now an outstanding slope to grow Cabernet. I can’t help but be reminded of the Medoc–which was once a swamp but now having been drained by Dutch fur traders many years ago, produces some of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon on earth. The Prelius spends 6 months in large French oak barrels and is bottled with a subtle influence of the oak barrel accompanying signature brambly finesse and whispers of violets and crunchy herbs. The perfect accompaniment for lamb roasted with a little rosemary or a nice cut of steak.”
